IPv6 and the Internet
2000 - 2010

Why Does IPv6 matter?
 The Internet has run out of addresses. The alternative is
expensive, complex and unreliable
 Enabler for new services and existing services in a cheaper,
simpler and more scalable manner
 Equal distribution of IP addresses around the world (unlike
IPv4), which is especially important for large populations in
Asia.

Why Does IPv6 matter? – P2P
Relay
IPv4 Internet
IPv6 Internet
 Examples of P2P services used today: VoIP (Skype and other),
Video and Gaming
 M2M communication and Home networking are also good
examples of P2P communication and the improvements due to
IPv6 are significant

What you need to think about as you move to IPv6
 What matters in your organisation? Review your strategies.
 What is the impact of IPv6? Define exactly where the impact
will be. Don’t miss a thing!
 What’s the deployment priority? Start small and expand.
 Which IPv6 features can add value to your organisation or your
customers? Make use of what you have.
 Define your deployment strategy.
 Execute!
