Roman Odessos
Odessos becomes part
of the Roman Empire

conquest of Moesia in

The Arrival of the Slavs
 By the early 7th century, Slavic peoples had settled
along the Black Sea coast. They renamed Odessos
“Varna.”
 In 681, the Byzantines officially recognized the SlavBulgarian state.

Varna was re-conquered
by Emperor

Battle of Varna, 1444
A Hungarian-led army is defeated
and Varna becomes part of the
Ottoman Empire
The End of Ottoman Control
After a two month siege in 1828, Varna falls to the Imperial
Russian navy.
The chief of the Ottoman garrison hands over the keys to
the city to Tsar Nicholas I.
