Our goals for today

Review why we need an electronic Health Record

Present a high level overview of the plan
 Steps we have taken so far
 Activities for the next couple of years

Preview core building blocks of the e-HR
 Computerized Physician Order Entry

2
The current state

Hundreds of millions of laboratory tests, prescriptions, and hand written records
are produced every year in Canada by thousands of doctors, hospitals, clinics
and pharmacies

The health system is facing increased pressures as a result of an aging and
growing population, shifts in care settings, provider shortages, economic
conditions, etc

More paper is not the answer
3
Where do we go from here?

An electronic Health Record has tremendous potential to reduce the
burden on health care providers and improve the delivery of safe patient
care
 Seamless patient encounters
 Easy and secure access to the complete patient record anytime, anywhere
 Decision support tools and access to evidence-based treatment information
4
Great but… How do we do this?

Information Management initiatives need to be implemented in a certain
sequence to produce a secure and reliable electronic health record
5

Preview: Computerized Physician Order
Entry

This presentation will provide an overview of computerized physician order entry
(CPOE) in the context of an emergency room visit that continues on into the inpatient setting of care. This presentation will also demonstrate how integrating
CPOE with electronic progress notes and the portal can help us achieve higher
levels of patient safety and easily access real-time patient information

Presented by Seema Kumbhat, MD Vice President Medical Affairs at McKesson
Corporation.

Preview: Bar Coding and Clinical
Documentation

This presentation will provide an overview of how bar code scanning and clinical
documentation enables the entire care team to review key clinical data in real
time before a medication is administered — improving patient safety by helping
to stop errors before they can occur. A patient-specific flow sheet incorporates
integrated clinical data so that nurses can chart and view relevant information
such as I&O, lab data and vital signs while administering medications and
infusions.

Presented by Andy Burnett, RN, FA. Senior Nurse Executive at McKesson
Corporation
