It includes not only gestures and body language but also how we utter words, this includes: Inflection, pauses, tone, volume, and accent. Non-Verbal-Communication also includes features of environments that affect interaction: Personal objects such as jewelry & clothes Physical appearance Facial appearance VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION SIMILARITIES Both are Symbolic Rule Guided Intentional & Non-intentional Reflect Culture VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION SIMILARITIES Both are Symbolic: We smile to symbolize pleasure A frown to show anger or displeasure Widen our Eyes to show surprise VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION SIMILARITIES Both are Rule Guided: A handshake is a conventional way to begin and end a business meeting, or begin a friendly introduction Smiling generally is understood to express friendliness VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION SIMILARITIES Both are Intentional & Non-intentional Intentional Dressing well for an interview Articulate well during an interview Non-intentional Wince when asked a tough question by the interviewer VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION SIMILARITIES Both Reflect Culture: U.S. people eat with knives/forks Asian countries use chopsticks American Women were skirts/pants/jeans Women in India wear saris VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION SIMILARITIES Both Reflect Culture cont.: In US, it is common for romantic partners to share food from each others plates. In Germany, it is considered rude to share plates. There are underline non-verbal clues that let the other person know it is their turn to speak. PRINCIPLES OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Establishes Relationship Level Meanings Non-verbal communication can convey three dimensions of relationship-level meanings Responsiveness – eye contact, facial expressions and body posture, we indicate our interest in others communication. Liking – non-verbal behaviors are often keen indicators of how positively/negatively we feel towards others. Power – non-verbal behaviors to assert dominance and to negotiate for status and influence.
