Canada’s Behind MANAGER/LEADER Over managed and underled Managers have employees. Leaders have followers. Managers command and control. Leaders empower and inspire. Managers seek stability. Leaders seek flexibility Manager/Leader Con’t Managers make decisions and solve problems. Leaders set direction and then empower and enable their team. Managers accept the organizational structure and culture. Leaders look for better ways. Question The question for us then, is not the need for leadership. The question is how to become the leaders we need to be or how to develop the leaders we need. Characteristics of a Leader Reflective Risk Taker/Flatten the Pyramid Empowerment (Self management and Self motivation) Self and others. Recognize Excellence and Creativity The ability to relate/communicate Communication Listening - It seems in today's world that there are two kinds of people: those who love to talk and those who hate to listen. LISTEN!! You must hear and from that, you must learn. Communication con’t Honesty, trust, accountability Focus on people Character development Clean up the clutter - reduce e-mail, faxes, seek feedback from primary internal sources Develop formalized ethics process Communication con’t The right to succeed/fail - The only way to ensure you never fail is to never attempt anything. Never be afraid to try. Remember, amateurs built the ark, professional built the Titanic. Confidence - An optimist thinks this is the best world. A pessimist fears this is true.
