How did the Virginia
Dynasty contribute to
Westward Expansion?
Virginia Dynasty, a term applied to
the succession of Virginia presidents
in the late eighteenth and early
nineteenth century.
4
Virginians held the presidency for thirty-two of thirty-six years:
George Washington 1789 to 1797
Thomas Jefferson 1801 to 1809
James Madison 1809 to 1817
James Monroe 1817 to 1825
The only interruption in the Virginia Dynasty's control of the
presidency was when John Adams, a native of Massachusetts, served a
single term as president from 1779-1801.
Louisiana
Purchase
• Doubled the size of the United States
• U.S. purchased 828,800 square miles of the French territory in 1803.
• Cost $23,213,568 for the Louisiana territory
• Purchase helped U.S. expand Westward
• Decision was made by Jefferson
• Jefferson decided to purchase Louisiana because he felt uncomfortable
about France and Spain having the power to block American trade access
to the port of New Orleans.
• People only settled in the southern part of Louisiana because in the
north, the climate was harsh for crops.
Embargo Act
► The
Embargo Act was an American legislative act
that served to forbid all international trade both to
and from the United States.
► This helped with Westward Expansion because
American ships were not allowed to sail to foreign
parts of the U.S., helping with local spending and
industry.
► The Embargo Act was a series of laws passed by
the congress of the U.S. between the years 18061808, during the second term of President Thomas
Jefferson.
The War of
1812
►
►
►
►
►
►
James Madison declared the war.
Fought in 1812-1815 between the
United States and the British Empire.
1812 British ships captured almost four
hundred American vessels, some within
sight of the U.S. coast, severely
disrupting with American export trade.
During the War of 1812, the Americans
tried to invade and take possession of
Canada while the British attacked major
U.S. seaports.
Madison and his advisors believed that
conquering Canada would be easy and
that economic coercion would force the
British to cut off the food supply for
their West Indies colonies.
Possession of Canada would be very
valuable because the British were
thought to be arming the Indians and
thereby blocking settlement of the west.
1823 Monroe Doctrine
►
U.S. doctrine which, on December 2,
1823, stated that European powers
were no longer to colonize or interfere
with the newly independent United
states of America.
►
Policy initiated by President James
Monroe which warned European
powers not to interfere in the affairs
of the Western Hemisphere.
Manifest Destiny
►
►
►
Belief that the United
States was destined to
expand from the Atlantic
seaboard to the Pacific
Ocean.
Manifest Destiny
comprised a mandate for
territorial expansionism.
Manifest Destiny
eventually became a
standard historical term,
often used as a synonym
for the territorial expansion
of the United States across
North America.
►The
phrase was first used
primarily by Jackson
Democrats in the 1840s to
promote the capture of what
is now the Western United
States.
The Virginia Dynasty Contributed to
Westward Expansion because……
► During
the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson made a
purchase doubling the size of the U.S.
► The War of 1812 secured the Northern border.
► During 1823, the Monroe Doctrine stated that all
European powers were to stay out of the whole
Western Hemisphere.
► Manifest Destiny was the belief that all land from
the Atlantic seaboard to the Pacific Ocean was
meant to be part of the U.S.
