The Battle of Chippawa By, Brett Pinkham Sarah Carruthers & Olivia Taylor Who The battle of Chippawa was between the British, who was under the command of Major-General Phineas Riall, and the American army under the command of General Jacob Brown. Great Britain had a military strength of 2100 men whereas the Americans had 3500 men. When The Battle occurred on July 5th, 1814 during the War of 1812 and only lasted about 3 hours. What During an invasion of upper Canada along the Niagara river the American military defeated the British and was a huge victory for the United States. Where The battle took place in Chippawa, Upper Canada (which is now Ontario) in Kingston, the main British base, along Lake Ontario. Why This War Happened Napoleon would soon be defeated in Europe which meant British reinforcements would soon be deployed back to Canada. John Armstrong, the United States Secretary of War, wanted to win a victory in Canada before the British reinforcements arrived. So he ordered Major General Jacob Brown to form the army with intentions to attack Kingston the main British base on Lake Ontario. How They Were Victorious The American’s had a better military and had better strategies for invasion and training. They also attacked with very good timing because of the lack of British reinforcements. Casualties and Losses Great Britain: 106 dead, 319 wounded, 75 wounded prisoners, 15 captured and 18 missing. United States: 60 killed, 249 wounded, 19 missing.
