Surabhi Raina, Assistant Professor, Biology Department, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY Surabhi Raina, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department and co-Director of the undergraduate Biotechnology program at the Syracuse University. She received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Banaras Hindu University, India in 1991. Before joining Syracuse University, Raina was a Research Associate at the Johns Hopkins University and later at the Pennsylvania State University. At John Hopkins University she studied human aquaporins, also known as water-channel proteins. These proteins are involved in regulating water transport across cell membranes and are associated with a variety of illnesses including abnormalities of kidney function, loss of vision, onset of brain edema, celiac disease, and cystic fibrosis. At the Pennsylvania State University she was involved in developing transposon mutagenesis system for the model plant Arabidopsis and later understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating pathogen defense in plants. At Syracuse University she continued her work on plant pathogen defense and developed an interdisciplinary undergraduate major in biotechnology and is co-directing this program. Raina has more than 25 years of experience in animal and plant molecular biology and biotechnology.
