Cell Structure and Function
Life is Cellular
Discovery of the Cell

Robert Hooke = (1665) Using one of the first
microscopes he publishes book that shows
drawings of sections of cork (plant material)
showing empty chambers he calls CELLS

Anton van Leeuwenhoek= (1674) Observes
tiny living organisms in drops of pone water
through his simple microscope
Discovery of the Cell

Matthias Schleiden= (1838) Concludes that
plants are made up of cells

Theodor Schwann= (1839) Concludes that
animals are made up of cells

Rudolph Virchow= (1855) Proposes that
cells come from existing cells
Discovery of the Cell

Janet Plowe= (1931) Demonstrates that is a
physical structure

Lynn Margulis= (1970) Proposes the idea
that certain organelles (tiny structures found
in cells) were once free living cells
themselves
The Cell Theory

The Cell Theory States That:



All living things are composed of cells
Cells are the basic units of structure and function in
living things
New cells are produced from existing cells
Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
Nucleus: a large membrane-enclosed
structure that contains genetic material in
the form of DNA



Eukayotic Cells= Have a nucleus
Prokaryotic Cells= Do not have a nucleus
