Key terms
• Haploid (1N or N)
– one copy of each chromosome
– gametophytes are haploid
– Formed by meiosis (reduction cell division); pairs of
chromosomes are divided into different cells
– Each daughter cell gets one of each chromosome
• Diploid (2N)
– two copies of each chromosome
– Formed by union of sperm & egg (forms a zygote)
– Sporophytes are diploid
• Mitosis – cell division in which all chromosomes are
copied; produces two cells with identical genetic
material
• Annual – one year life cycle; Biennial – 2 growing
seasons; Perennial – lives for several years,
reproduces every year
