Two visions of the world
Utopia
 Definition:
is a term for an ideal
society. It has been used to describe
both planned communities that
attempt to create an ideal society,
and fictional societies portrayed in
literature. (The Garden of Eden)

 Definition:
is the vision of a society that is the
opposite of ideal. A dystopian society is a
state in which the conditions of life are
extremely bad, characterized by human
misery, poverty, oppression, violence,
disease, and/or pollution
Characteristics of a Dystopian

is used to control the citizens
of a society
 Information, independent thought , and
freedom are restricted
 A figurehead or concept is worshipped by
the citizens of the society
 Citizens are perceived to be under
constant surveillance

have a fear of the outside world
 Citizens live in a dehumanized state
 The natural world is banished and
distrusted
 Citizens conform to uniform expectations.
Individuality and dissent are bad
