The Power of Propaganda: Why did
people join the army in 1914?

• To understand why men joined the army
in 1914
• To understand how propaganda and its
techniques works to persuade people
• To interpret various propaganda posters
and produce your own propaganda poster

500,000 men had volunteered to join
the army

Look at the posters and decide what you think
their PURPOSE is (what are they trying to get
people to do or think?)
EVIDENCE: pull out any techniques (visuals,
design elements, text, style, language use) that are
persuasive.

Create your own Propaganda Poster
Using the reasons you discovered design a poster to
persuade someone to join up to the army.
What should a good propaganda poster do?
•Persuade people to join up
How?
•By making them feel guilty
•By making the war seem like fun
•By making them think it was their duty
•By offering them something they would want e.g. money or work,
•Extension task- plan a speech to go with your poster that would
persuade people to join up!
