Chapter 17: The Atmosphere
What is Weather?
Weather: snapshot of atmospheric
conditions such as temperature,
precipitation, wind velocity, humidity, etc.
Meteorology: Study of Weather
What is the atmosphere?
A blanket of gases
surrounding the
Earth.
What makes up our atmosphere?
Variable Components in Air
 Water Vapor:
Water in Gas form
 Ozone: (O3 )
Absorbs harmful UV radiation from the sun
 Solid Particles:
Examples include sea salt, fine soil, smoke,
and soot from fires, pollen, ash and dust from
volcanic eruptions
Layers
Earth
• Troposphere
- Lowest Layer
- Temp decreases with height
-This is where we live
- Weather occurs here
• Stratosphere
- Second lowest layer
- Temp increases with height and
airplanes fly in this layer
- Ozone (03) layer
- Absorbs most of the damaging
ultraviolet sunlight (UV-B)
Layers of the Atmosphere
Still would feel cold
• Mesosphere
- Third layer from earth’s surface
- Temp decreases
- Majority of meteors burn up
• Thermosphere
- Outer most layer
- Very few molecules, temp
increases because oxygen and
nitrogen absorb harmful solar
radiation. Satellites and Space
Shuttle fly in this layer.
Ozone Layer
Atmospheric Structure
Label the layers of the
atmosphere below:
4.
1._____________
Troposphere - contains
dust, moisture, weather.
2._____________
Stratosphere - contains
protective ozone
3.
3._____________
Mesosphere - coldest
layer
4._____________
Thermosphere - contains
auroras, high temperature but
low heat
