Chapter 3
Parts of the Brain
• Cerebral Cortex: outermost portion of the
brain, controls high level thought
• Hemispheres: contains fissure, corpus
collosum
• Lobes:
– FM/SP/O/T
• Frontal Lobe: Memory, planning strategies,
personality, impulsivity, motor strip,
creating language
• Parietal Lobe: Sensory strip, association
areas (multiple uses)
• Occipital Lobe: Sight
• Temporal Lobe: Hearing, understanding
language
The Lower Brain
• Thalamus: Sensory switchboard (4 of 5).
• Hypothalamus: rage, pleasure, hunger,
thirst, sexual desire
• Limbic System: basic emotions: amygdala
and memory: hippocampus.
• Reticular Activating System: Net that
catches/sends nerve impulses from the
spinal chord and vice/versa. Alertness,
breathing, heart rate.
• Cerebellum: balance and coordination
Brain Communication
• Neuron: dendrites, axon, axon terminal,
synapse, neurotransmitters, myelin
• Neurotransmitters: acetylcholine-movement
and memory; dopamine-movement
(schizophrenia); endorphins-relieve pain
and give a sense of well being.
Central & Peripheral NS
• CNS:brain & spinal cord
• Peripheral NS: Everything but the CNS
– Somatic NS(Sensory and Motor Nerves)
– Autonomic NS(Control system of the body)
• Involuntary functions
– Sympathetic NS
– Parasympathetic NS
PCASSP
The Endocrine System
• Pituitary Gland: master gland
– Growth Hormone
• Thyroid Gland: metabolism, speed/body
operates
• Adrenal Glands: prepare body for
emergency
• Gonads:sex glands, have both: andro/estro
