SABBATICAL ABSTRACTS FOR 2012‐2013 Ashworth, Suzanne (English, Fall 2012) My sabbatical will advance two essay‐projects on early American literature and Spiritualism. First, I will finish an article‐in‐progress – “Shadow Reader: Spiritualism in Augusta Jane Evans’ Beulah” – and submit it for publication. Second, I will research and write an essay‐length study of trance and the body in Edgar Allen Poe’s short fiction. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Ballard, Heidi (Sociology and Anthropology, Spring 2013) My proposed sabbatical research examines greater Columbus area community sustainability initiatives through a survey research project of related organizations. A subsequent publishable article will examine how such initiatives connect to the global sustainability movement. This survey and analysis will contribute unique documentation of the successes and challenges area groups’ experience. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor, Continuing Education, Programs of the University Bell, Greg (Theatre and Dance, Spring 2013) To apply for, study for and successfully complete the Rigger – Theatre Certification Examination, offered by the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ECTP), administered through Professional Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA), an entertainment industry trade organization. This exam is recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as the definitive evaluation of the knowledge and skills of professional theatre riggers. Continuing Education Birmingham, Sheri (Equine Science, Spring 2013) There are few equine science textbooks that are specific to course content at the collegiate level. During my sabbatical, I will research topics, prepare an outline, identify publishers, and draft a chapter for a future book that will encompass the content of the equine introductory course and encourage active learning. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor, Programs of the University Buck, Duane (Mathematical Sciences, Fall 2012) As part of an international curriculum project, a pedagogical tool will be developed to support a model‐based introduction to computer science. Previous model‐based curricula have been developed, but have met limited acceptance. The difference here is that the modeling is expressed with Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams, eliminating the cognitive load of conventional programming languages. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Chaney, Norman (English, Spring 2013) This is a study in book form that considers the biblical principle of wisdom as an ecological principle for our age. I reveal how eight writers illuminate this principle and advance religious and ecological ways of thinking and acting toward the creation. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Chavez, Ruth (Nursing, Fall 2012) For this sabbatical, I intend to immerse myself in developing, implementing and evaluating my capstone thesis/project for the completion of my Doctor of Nursing Practice terminal degree. The focus of the project will be on researching health care practices of junior nursing students and piloting a health promotion nursing elective course. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor, Continuing Education 1
Dennis, David (Business, Accounting and Economics, Spring 2013) I plan to examine the disconnect between professional accountants (CPAs, CMAs, CFEs, CIAs) and academic accountants. Academics are criticized for curriculum design that does not address the needs of prospective employers. This project will use interviews in an effort to define more clearly concerns between professional and academic accountants. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Esson, Joan (Chemistry, Spring 2013) I propose to use my sabbatical leave to join the laboratory of Dr. William Heineman at the University of Cincinnati to conduct research developing new spectroelectrochemical sensors for environmental and clinical monitoring. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Galarce, Carmen (Modern Languages and Cultures, Spring 2013) Between 1998 and 2004, the Chilean newspapers El Mercurio, La Nación and El Siglo published citizens’ letters that highlighted the arrest of General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte. I have gathered over fifteen hundred letters that represent the most significant corpus of this event in the history of the country. I have been analyzing these letters from historical, linguistic, and cultural/literary viewpoints. The focus of this project is to finish the analysis, collect additional data, and prepare a manuscript of a book. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Haverkamp, Jacqueline (Nursing, Fall 2012) I will use a qualitative, focus group methodology to answer the question: Do we need to legislate that newly registered nurses in Ohio obtain a baccalaureate degree within ten years of initial licensure, for patient safety? Results will be written as a publishable article after attending a Scholarly Writing Retreat. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Hoggarth, Michael (Biology and Earth Science, Fall 2012) Mussels are ecological important animals that are rare and essentially immotile; they cannot move away from an imminent, predictable threat. Whenever such a threat is planned (a bridge or pipeline), mussels are relocated. The objective of this study is to determine if areas denuded of mussels have regained their faunas. This study will result in a publishable article. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Johnson, Amy (Art, Fall 2012) My project examines the work of nineteenth and twentieth‐century photographers and artists as they contributed to developing new visual identities for the modern city. I shall conduct archival research at the George Eastman House, Schlesinger Library, and other sites in preparation for beginning a manuscript on this topic. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Johnson, Robert (Theatre and Dance, Fall 2012) I propose to learn and employ what has recently become industry standard software for theatrical lighting design and apply it to a design for the dance concert late fall. I also propose to challenge myself further by writing/ recording sound and music for the dance piece that I will light. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Jones, Eric (Communication, Fall 2012) For this project, I intend to produce a radio documentary and podcast exploring the volunteer mentoring program operated by the Franklin County Children Services center. The documentary will explore the difficulties of managing such a program, the reasons for volunteer involvement, and the relationships between mentors and their assigned mentees. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Jung, Sunhwa (Education, Fall 2012) Play is an integral part of early childhood and is critical for child development. The play skills deficits of children with autism result in limited opportunities for their social interaction and learning of appropriate skills. This project’s purpose is to develop intervention strategies to improve play skills for these children. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor 2
Kilbane, Claire (Education, Fall 2012) During my sabbatical, I will complete a manuscript in contract with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and develop materials complementing another manuscript set to be published by Allyn & Bacon in 2013. Development of these resources—
illustrating effective technology integration for 21st Century learning—will allow me to expand my own knowledge and produce materials that promote quality teaching. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Kirk, Christina (Theatre and Dance, Fall 2012) I will perform the role of Cleopatra in a production with Columbus Dance Theatre that will re‐imagine traditional assumptions about this character. Through intensive collaboration with experts in the field of acting, movement, voice and dance, I will continue my investigation of the relationship of movement and voice to performance. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Laurie‐Rose, Cynthia (Psychology, Fall 2012) This sabbatical leave will advance my research program on mental workload. I will conduct an empirical investigation of workload that will extend the findings that I obtained during my last sabbatical. In addition, I will prepare two manuscripts for publication using previously collected data sets on perceived workload. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Lehman, Jeff (Biology and Earth Science, Spring 2013) This study addresses the interaction between plants and their fungal pathogens. Specifically, I will explore: 1) the effect of host resistance on fungal population structure and 2) the inheritance of partial resistance of plant hosts to their fungal pathogens. This study will further the development and management of resistant plant varieties. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Lescinsky, Halard (Biology and Earth Science, Spring 2013) During the sabbatical I will complete field work on fossil reefs in Curacao and complete the writing phase of research projects on coral reef construction, Papua New Guinea; modern brachiopod ecology, Patagonia; and fossil brachiopod ecology, southern Ohio. I will also complete my Coral Reef Ecology book manuscript. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Mafi, Shirine (Business, Accounting and Economics, Fall 2012) The purpose of this sabbatical is to develop an interdisciplinary minor in Nonprofit Administration housed in the Department of Business, Accounting and Economics as well as publish an article on how philanthropy‐based education increases students’ social engagement and social responsibility. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Reninger, Kristin (Education, Fall 2012) This sabbatical project comprises two scholarly endeavors: 1) to complete data analysis of a classroom‐based ethnographic study that takes place October 2011 to June 2012, and 2) to write and submit a paper for presentation at a national conference of literacy education (e.g., Literacy Research Association, International Reading Association). Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Rocks, Joan (Health and Sport Sciences, Spring 2013) The athletic training education curriculum has evolved from the traditional lecture format to one that is fluid, active and dynamic. Consequently, curricular changes are warranted to meet the students’ learning needs. Team‐Based Learning is a pedagogy being proposed to develop these learning strategies. Measurement of metacognition will occur through the use of self‐report instruments. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Schaffner, Barbara (Nursing, Spring 2013) My project will expand my clinical expertise to include pediatric psych/mental health through a postmaster’s program at Stony Brook University; using the sabbatical term to complete a course and1/2 of required clinical hours. I will travel to Belize to establish 3
relations with a medical mission for the purpose of developing a service learning course to be implemented post sabbatical. Continuing Education Shpancer, Noam (Psychology, Spring 2013) I plan to use my sabbatical to finish writing my third psychological novel, each of which has a protagonist who is a psychologist. This third novel will be titled ‘Valley of Ghosts.’ To that end, I plan to travel to Israel and research the various locations where the events of the novel take place, mainly in and around the city of Jerusalem. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Steigman, Karen (English, Fall 2012) I will complete an essay to submit for publication and presentation, studying the politics of empathy in Cold War fiction by Joan Didion, Renata Adler, and Jamaica Kincaid in relation to the emergent canon of post‐9/11 U.S. fiction. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Svitana, Kevin (Biology and Earth Science, Fall 2012) In this project, I will apply novel approach for placement of passive diffusion samplers at a hazardous waste site in Maryland in order to investigate a potentially more efficient and cost effective method for monitoring volatile organic compound contamination in groundwater. I have been involved with the cleanup of groundwater at this site since 1999. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor Thompson, Susan (Mathematical Sciences, Spring 2013) This year‐long action research project provides an alternate delivery option during the academic year for students to complete developmental mathematics. Experience gained from summer use of an online intelligent tutoring system supports utilizing this product to improve Otterbein’s efficiency and students’ success. Experimental offerings will be evaluated to determine effectiveness and suitable modifications. Programs of the University. Vogt, Marjorie (Nursing, Spring 2013) The purpose of the project is to increase opportunities for nursing students by developing additional cultural immersion service learning experiences; develop a plan to expand the graduate nurse practitioner program into the mental health specialty through faculty development; and, to continue research on cultural immersions and impact on nursing students. Scholarly/Creative Endeavor, Programs of the University White, Rebecca (Theatre and Dance, Fall 2012) My project is designed to increase and strengthen internship relationships with professional regional theatres and professional independent costume houses. This project will also define and clarify the expectations we should require of our students as they participate in our theatre production assignments within the costume area. Continuing Education, Programs of the University Yntema, Richard (History and Political Science, Fall 2012) This research project proposes to contribute to ongoing scholarly debates about if guilds were rent‐seeking institutions. This comparative study of brewing guilds in Holland argues that rent seeking occurred when a town’s brewers’ guild was at a comparative disadvantage with rivals, but not in export‐oriented towns with a comparative advantage.
