Tea Tree Oil
Here is the info on Tea Tree Oil, it is a traditional herbal antiseptic / germicide. Mainly
use for the treatment of minor skin aliments and abrasions.
You will find it as the main ingredient in many natural products use for cleaning and
disinfection.
Tea tree oil is the essential oil steam distilled from the Australian plant Melaleuca
alternifolia. It has also been known as melaleuca oil. Tea tree oil contains over 100
components, mostly monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and their alcohols. The component
terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant (minimum 30%) and is said to be responsible for most
of the antimicrobial activity. Levels of 14 components, including terpinen-4-ol are
stipulated in the International Standard for Oil of Melaleuca, Terpinen-4-ol type (ISO
4730).
MRSA are Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that have become resistant to several
antibiotics including methicillin. MRSA can infect people and cause disease, or can
simply colonise the skin of healthy people without doing them any harm. MRSA
infections are often serious and life-threatening while MRSA colonisation is not usually a
problem for the carrier.
We know that TTO can inhibit and kill MRSA in the lab. There is also mounting
evidence that it may be useful for eliminating the topical carriage of MRSA. On the
current evidence, it is unlikely that TTO will be used to treat systemic MRSA infections
although it may find a use in treating wounds infected or colonised with MRSA.
Folklore also claims that TTO is effective in controlling fleas, ticks, lice, and although
has a rather distinctive smell has been used to eliminate/neutralise other offensive smells.
Placing a few small drops in warm water, and putting in a spray bottle, is a quick and
simple way to disinfect your dogs paws, coat. Many dog exhibitors familiar with TTO
also use it as a coat conditioner, mosquito repellent. It's uses by the herbal community
are wide and varied.
TTO is only ever to be used topically and never swallowed or used as mouth wash. The
taste alone should deter this, but large amounts (based dependant on weight of digester),
are toxic.
There are many web sites both scientific and homeopathic that have further information
of TTO. If you wish to investigate this product more fully.
Tea Tree Oil is available in most drug stores, Wal-Mart drug dept, and herbal stores.
