Our Planet Earth CHAPTER 2 SOLAR SYSTEM • What is at the center??? • 8 planets –Terrestrial planets – solid, rocky crusts • Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars –Gas giant planets – gaseous, less dense • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune Asteroids, Comets and Meteoroids • Asteroids – small, irregularly shaped, planetlike objects – found in asteroid belt b/w Mars and Jupiter • Comets – made of icy dust particles and frozen gases (bright balls w/ feathery tails) • Meteoroids – pieces of space debris and chunks of iron and rock – called meteorites if collide with Earth Water, Land, and Air • 70% of Earth’s surface is water and 30% is land • Hydrosphere – • Lithosphere – • Atmosphere – • Biosphere - Landforms • 4 major ones – mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains • Also underwater landforms • 7 large landmasses called ________ • Continental shelf – part of a continent that extends underwater Heights and Depths • Highest point on Earth - ??? (29,035 feet) • Lowest dry land point - shore of Dead Sea in Southwest Asia • Deepest point on Earth – Mariana Trench in Pacific Ocean (35,827 feet deep)
