Our Solar system
Write out what you think below
• Where did our solar system come from?
___________________________________
• What makes up our solar system?
_______________________________________
_______________________________________
• How is it organized?

• What are some features you know about the components of our solar
system (the things you named that make up our solar system)?

Big Bang theory
• A theory (a concept, it is not a law) called the big
bang theory developed by scientists: Georges
Lemaitre, Albert Einstein, Alexander Friedmann
and Edwin Hubble is the theory that the universe
began with a cosmic explosion sending the
dense, hot matter outwards and these evolved
into galaxies.
The Universe
• Many people confuse the universe with the galaxy
and with the solar system.
• Did you know they are different?
• The Universe consists of millions of galaxies
• A galaxy consists of possibly many solar systems and
millions of stars (Stars are usually born in clusters).
• The milky way galaxy is only one galaxy in the
universe
• It contains our solar system and millions of stars.
The milky way galaxy
• The milky way galaxy is a spiral galaxy with four
arms

of our sun and solar system at one arm
Our solar system takes 236 million years
To orbit the nucleus (core) of the Milky
Way Galaxy
Our solar system
Consists of
• our sun – is a star that escaped from its cluster. It is not a huge ball of fire. It is
actually made up of a gas
• Planets – in our solar system we have eight (8) planets and two (2) dwarf
planets
• Asteroids- rocky remains from the formation of our solar system
• Meteoroids – small particle of debris in space
• Meteors – when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere it is called a meteor
• Meteorites – if a meteor survives the impact with Earth, it is called a Meteorite
• Comets - A small icy body that when it is close enough to the sun has an
observable come or a tail(you can see it)
• Natural Satellites – are bodies that orbit other objects such as the moon; it
orbits Earth and is therefore Earth’s natural satellite
Assignment – RESEARCH and WRITE UP
ON THE FOLLOWING
1. In slide 5 what is meant by a light year?
2. What gas is the sun made of and what gas does it make?
3. There are two Asteroid belts in our solar system, name
them.
4. What is a dwarf planet?
5. Our planets are classed into two categories: terrestrial
and gaseous, complete the table with the relevant
information: name the planets and identify two features
of each. List in the column “Any natural satellites” natural
satellites that planet has.
6. Draw or stick pictures of each planet in your books, a
meteoroid, a comet, an asteroid and a natural satellite
