World Religions: Hinduism
Hinduism – India’s first major religion that
developed in India over many centuries; it
traces its root to older traditions such as
Vedic beliefs and Brahmanism
Dharma – one of the basic beliefs
of Hinduism that stands for law,
obligation, and duty
Brahman – in Hinduism, the one
supreme power, or divine force,
that everything is part of
Deities – in Hinduism, the forms that
represent the various qualities of
Brahman (also known as Multiple
Gods)
Karma – the belief that how a person
lives will affect their next life
Samsara – the belief in the continuous
cycle of birth, death, and rebirth
Vedas – a collection of Hindu sacred
writings
Sanskrit – An ancient language of India
Brahmanism – ancient India religion
in which the Brahmans (priests &
scholars) are the dominate class
Caste – One of the fixed social classes,
which cannot be changed, into which
people are born in India
Reincarnation – The belief that
after someone dies their soul lives
again in another body
Pilgrimage – A journey to a holy
place for religious reasons
