Characteristics
 Communicate by
electrical impulses
 Central nervous system
(CNS)
 Peripheral nervous
system (PNS)
Cell Types
 Neurons
 Supporting cells
Location
 Brain
 Spinal cord
 Nerves
Primary Function
 Regulates and
controls body systems
Nervous Tissue
 Nerve cells, or neurons,
receive and transmit
electrical impulses
throughout the body.
 You will read about neurons
in Unit 3.
Nervous Tissue: The CNS and
the PNS
 The CNS (central nervous
system) is composed of
the Brain and Spinal
cord.
 All peripheral nerves (the
PNS, peripheral
nervous system) branch
off of the spinal cord.
The Neuron:
Basic Structure and
Function
 Dendrites
 Nucleus
 Cell Body
 Axon
 Myelin Sheath
 Synaptic Cleft/ Synapse
 neurotransmitter
Did You Know?....
 Your brain and spinal cord are composed of
TRILLIONS of bundled neurons sending and
receiving messages every second
The Spinal Cord
 The spinal cord sends and
receives information both to
and from the brain. It is
continuous with the brain
stem.
Motor
Neuron
 It is composed of trillions of
neurons, of which there are 3
Types:
interneurons
Sensory neurons
Challenge Question…
 Can you
identify the 3
different
types of
neurons
shown here?
The Spinal cord
(cont).
 The spinal cord is highly
organized, and
sends/receives trillions of
signals continuously to the
various regions of the PNS.

 Identify the following 12 tissue samples. Be as
specific as possible and remember, structure
determines function…
