Evolution
• True or false?
• Which is the ‘proper’ evolutionary
explanation? Why? What is wrong with the
‘improper’ ones?
Evolution - misconceptions
 Evolution means organisms always get better.
 Individuals can evolve during the lifespan.

Evolution and human sexual behaviour
• Why might it be that...
– Men experience more sexual jealousy than
women?
– Men are more physically aggressive than women?
– Women rank money and status in a potential
partner more highly than men do?
Exam Question
• Explain what is meant by evolution. Illustrate
your answer with an example from human
behaviour (4 marks).
– What is being tested here (AO1, AO2)?
– How are marks likely to be allocated?
Mark Scheme
• AO1 – max 2 for explanation of evolution:
gradual change in inherited traits of a species
over time; adaptation to the environment;
natural selection; survival of the fittest etc.
• AO2 – max 2 for explanation of how a human
behaviour might have resulted from evolution
(e.g. Sexual selection, phobias). Explanation
likely to focus on the advantage the behaviour
has given.
