M.Sc. studentship in impact crater magma evolution at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland M.Sc. studentship - Petrology and microanalysis of volcanic glass clasts in the Sudbury impact structure fill (Onaping Formation). Supervisors Prof. Balz Kamber and Dr Emma Tomlinson (Department of Geology, Trinity College Dublin) Project description A two year M.Sc. research studentship opportunity (staring September 2013) in the field of magma evolution exists for highly motivated individuals at the Department of Geology, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. As part of a Science Foundation Ireland project, supporting one postdoctoral fellow, a laboratory technician and three postgraduate students, this M.Sc. project aims to reconstruct the evolution of post-impact magmatism in the Sudbury impact structure. The crater fill is represented by the Onaping Fm., which contains between 2-3 km of complex fall-back breccia and volcanic deposits. The magma evolution will be reconstructed from the composition of glass clasts that occur continuously through the uppermost 2 km of the formation. The field work will involve mapping of a key locality and detailed sampling of the volcanic stratigraphy along two transects. The laboratory work will comprise petrography, SEM analysis and trace-element analyses by in-house state-of-the-art LAICPMS. The ultimate goal is to establish the potential of post-impact volcanism as an analogue for Hadean magmatism. Requirements and Training The ideal candidate is a Geology graduate with some laboratory and/or microanalysis expertise and field experience in mapping volcanic rocks. The project is open to EU students only (students who have been resident for 3 out of the last 5 years in the EU) and includes fees and a tax-free stipend of €18,000 per annum. Prospective candidates should send an academic c.v. and the names and contact details of two academic referees to [email protected] and [email protected]. Evaluation of applications will begin on June 10th 2013.
