Some rocks are called ores
Vocabulary:
ores
A mineral or a rock that has enough
metal in it to make it worth mining

Most ores are found in beds with rocks
of little value

Ore beds close to the surface are easy
to mine
But others are deep within the ground

Some ores contain metals like iron and
copper
Metals are usually shiny substances

Iron and copper can transfer heat and
electricity easily

Some metals can be pounded flat or
pulled into wires without breaking
This means they are malleable

Lead, gold, and aluminum are metals
found in ores

Metal ores are important because so
many products are made from them

From gold, we make jewelry and
fillings for teeth

Lead is used to make pipe
Copper is used to make wire

Aluminum is used to make airplanes,
cans, foil, cooking pots, and motors

Iron is used to make steel
Which in turn we then can make
stainless steel

Some ores contain minerals like sulfur
and graphite

Sulfur is important because it is used in
making medicines and fertilizers

Graphite, a form of carbon,
is the “lead” in most pencils
