It is known for it`s arches and canyons. • Great White Throne • • • • • is a huge mass of stone rising nearly half a mile from the canyon floor. may reflect purple colors at one minute and pale yellow the next Height 6744 feet Location - Southeast Kolob Arch • One of the longest spanning free stand arches in the world! • The width is 287.4 ft. Zion Canyon • • Length- wall towers are 2 to 3,000 ft 50-70 per mile 15miles long to only a few feet wide Main feature of the park • Anasazi and the settlers Brigham Young believed in respecting the land. They both believed that the land should be preserved. Culture • Native Americans (also known as Anazasi) •American Indians lived in Zion 2,000 ago Ancestreal Puebloans •Brigham Young and his Mormon Followers were the first Eurapean americans in the area in the 1840`s • Zion National Park was preserved for 81 years In 2010, 2,825,505 people visited the park • These are the most important waterways in the park. They are Virgin River and Weeping Rock, last but not least Archangel Cascades. Waterways Virgin River • about 162 miles long • Cuts through the sandstone of the National Park • Is formed by conflunce of East Fork Virgin River Weeping Rock - spring water seeping out of the rock 100 feet over head are lakes nearly 1000 years to travel through the sandstone above it Archangel Cascades are a series of cascades sheeting their way down the hard sandstone bedrock Left Fork North Creek continues to trickle it`s way further down stream the subway is a spectacular semi- technical slot canyon in the Kolob Terrace section of Zion National Park Rocks and Minerals There are many rock types that make up Zion National Park. • The rocks that are in Zion NP are sandstone and mud and bedrock. • Rock forms range in color from, dark red, and range to purple and pink • Layers of sand , mud, and gravel washed down by nearby mountains
