Rock Hunting Self-Guided topic Note: This is the instructions given to students at University High last year. These are not the instructions for your VCE geography project. Rock formations Up to you • You will be choosing a rock formation to research • You must explain how the rock formation was formed • You must state what sort of rock your formation is made out of, both type of rock and classification of rock Classification • Your rock will be one or more of: – Igneous (extrusive/intrusive) – Sedimentary – Metamorphic • You will have to explain what this means for your rock Definitions • In the context of geology, you will need to define: – Weathering – Erosion – Depositing Wave Rock Example • Wave Rock, WA 1. Igneous granite is uncovered by weathering in site of rock today Example • Wave Rock, WA 1. Igneous rocks are formed from cooling magma. In the case of granite, this happens underground as the rock is forced upwards. (intrusive igneous) Wave Rock • Wave Rock, WA 2. Chemical weathering softens the rock Wave Rock • Wave Rock, WA 3. Random cracks appear on the surface Wave Rock • Wave Rock, WA 4. Water runs into these cracks Wave Rock • Wave Rock, WA 4. The water gradually removes the rock Wave Rock • Wave Rock, WA 4. The water gradually removes the rock Wave Rock • Wave Rock, WA 5. We arrive at what we see today Wave Rock • Wave Rock, WA 6. Discolouration comes from chemical effects Your Task • Your task today is to find a rock formation that you find interesting • Find out – The name of the formation – The location of the formation – The type of rock and classification
