• Have very small mass (almost can

Atomic Number
• Atomic number = number of
protons
– For neutral atom = number of
electrons
• Atoms of different elements have
different Atomic numbers
(number of protons)
– At # Hydrogen = 1
– At. # Carbon = 6
Mass number
• Mass number = protons + Neutrons
(p+n)
– Electron mass too small (ignored)
• # Neutrons = Mass # – Atomic #
