Atoms

All matter, such
as solid, liquid
and gases, is
composed of
atoms.
Atom
Atoms have three basic parts
 Proton
 Neutron
 Electron
Atoms
Atoms
Nucleus – is the center.
There are two types
of charges found in
the nucleus.
 Protons
 Neutrons
Protons & Neutron

Protons have a
positive charge.

Neutrons have
no charge.
Electrons

Electrons have
negative charge.

They are found
circling the nucleus
in paths called
orbits.
Facts on Atom


Protons have a positive charge equal in
magnitude to the electron’s negative charge.
Neutrons have the same mass as a proton, but no
charge.

Atomic Number & Atomic Mass

Atomic Number – the number of protons in an
atom.

Atomic Mass = Number of protons + number of
neutrons.
Symbol – one or two letters that stand for the
name of the element.
