Schools have been closed in the Chinese capital Beijing and flights
cancelled due to heavy snow. About 33cm of snow has covered parts of
Beijing, the most since 1951.
• Some 30 highways have closed in the north of China and in Beijing the
city's Capital airport saw 90% of flights cancelled or delayed on Sunday. By
early Monday, around 40% of flights had been disrupted.
• In some parts of Beijing, 33cm of snow fell, the heaviest in more than half
a century. Volunteers have taken to the streets with snow-shovels to clear
the drifts. School children saw their New Year holiday extended by the
severe weather. Here and in neighboring Tianjin they were given the day
off.
• More snow is expected across the north of China, although Beijing is
expected to remain clear, but temperatures in the capital, already at
minus 14, could drop even further.
• Thousands were left stranded for a second day after the cold weather
brought severe disruption to transport across the country.
Left stranded: stuck in the middle of a
journey, not able to continue and not able
to go back.
Severe disruption: very bad interference
with normal services meaning roads are
closed and train and air services reduced.
Some: Approximately.
Volunteers: Members of the public who
choose to help without being paid.
Snow-shovels: hand-held tools used to
pick up and move snow.
The drifts: the piles of fallen snow.
Extended: made longer
Could drop even further: might get lower.
The Government's Standing Committee for Climate Change at the meeting
held on 17July 2008 identified six strategic lines key to reducing
Greenhouse Gas.
Greenhouse: Waste and manure management; Mobility Sustainable
Building
Sustainable Energy Sustainability, Policy and Forest Sinks and innovation.

Spain is in an area particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and you feel the adverse effects
on water resources, coasts, biodiversity and the Mediterranean ecosystem, to endure higher temperatures,
more often suffer fires and heat waves.
Spring comes earlier on average 2.3 days per decade, increasingly migrating birds before, sea level rise and

Diseases: portend increased mortality from heat waves, more disease transmitted by mosquitoes or
ticks and more health problems caused by the high level of contamination.
Temperature: Inside peninsular could rise between 5 and 70C in summer and between 3 and 4 in
winter (in the rest of Spain warming would be between 2 and 30 minor).
Precipitation: In summer is expected to fall "maximum" (except Islands), and more in winter less in
the northwest and southeast.
Sea level: According to the most pessimistic scenario, could grow to a meter.
Costs: many beaches would disappear, especially in the Bay of Biscay and flooded much of the
lowlands, partly built (delta Del Ebro, La Manga del Mar Menor, the coast of Doñana).
Others: Desertification, loss of species in fishing areas and entire ecosystems, less available
