Feb. 2008-City Traffic System –Karim Soliman
General Outline
Intro
Egypt to
focus on
• Climate change & CO2 Emission
• Public health (Mortalities) from road accident.
• % of CO2 Emission due to road transport (traffic).
• Mortalities due to road transport.
• For Climate change it’s time to focus only on adaptation
• For Mortalities caused by road transport – It’s is time to work
together and solve this problem by education & awareness.
Solutions
What’s climate change & CO2
emission?
• Important green house gas – absorb heat and
reflect sun light.
• Increased significantly with industrial revolution
(1750).
• IPCC 2007, water levels due to increase of
temperature & melt of ice + strange changes in
weather.
• Reducing CO2 emission will only reduce the
destructive effects of climate change.
Mortalities due to road transport!
• High especially in countries of low
socioeconomic situations.
• Many factors contribute to it e.g. traffic rules &
road safety.

Solutions
Percentage of carbon dioxide emitted
from road transport in Egypt?
• I couldn’t find any study or data to show a direct
number.
• However we can estimate it roughly using the
following methodology.
The data are collected from the International Energy
Agency (IEA) & the (DEFRA) Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, UK
England:
• 22% of emitted CO2 result from road (motor)
transport.
• Oil & Liquefied petrol consumption in road
transport or motors = 18851 tones
• Total oil consumption: 45805 tones
• Therefore, % of oil used for road (motor)
transport = 41.2 %
Egypt:
• Oil & Liquefied petrol consumption in road
transport or motors = 2952
• Total oil consumption: 18388
• Therefore, % of oil used for road (motor)
transport = 16.053 %
• Less then 8% may be 4% of emitted CO2 result
from road (motor) transport.

Solutions
Solution to reduce the emitted CO2
from road transport?
• Use bicycles – an environment friendly mean of
transportation.
• Encourage public transportation.
• Prevent TATA from our markets.
TATA® Automobiles
Ultra low cost vehicle

The most important thing in the
problem of climate change?
• Focus on adaptation!
▫ Building new cities.
▫ Using biotechnology to increase production of
crops & compensate land losses.

Solutions
Mortalities due road transport in
Egypt!
Some statistics according to Al-Ahram
weekly paper.
• Financial losses caused by traffic
accidents -- estimated at LE1 billion a
year -- include damaged vehicles,
health care, hospital fees and lost
working hours.
• Zeinab Mohamed is sitting on the curb
of the insanely congested intersection
of 26th of July Street and Al-Galaa
Street in downtown Cairo waiting for
the number 85 bus.
• Doesn't she think this is a dangerous
spot to wait? "If an accident happens,
then it's God's will," she answers.
• According to official statistics, 73 per
cent of road traffic accidents in Egypt
in 2003 were a result of human error.
Contrary to what Mohamed believes,
therefore, accidents can be avoided.

Passive actions!
• The National Council for Road Safety (NCRS)
was established in 2001 and became operational
in 2003. The council's mandate is to integrate all
governmental and non- governmental efforts in
the conceptualization of a national plan to
combat road accidents in Egypt.
Future predictions!!

Solutions
It’s is time to work together and solve
this problem by education &
awareness.
• Start a wide awareness based on well trusted
educational materials to teach people traffic rules.
• GEF Conference – Stand up with our deep interest
to improve our situation “remember 2010”.
• Spread the message everywhere because people are
already in need for a solution – The success of a
solution is directly proportional to the number of
failures.
• Non governmental efforts are very important today
& in future.
• After 30 years all those who are responsible will be
“we”.
A story I want to share with you!
Lets form groups of students! Why?
• Write a scientific reports about this/other issue(s) and
produce modern educational materials to teach people traffic
rules.
• Lets spread well trusted readable resources.
▫ Original Science Text Books.
▫ Trusted websites.
▫ Learn computer & English.
• Start from next meeting presentations which teach us here
some efficient traffic rules to solve some of our daily problems
“at least we can solve others problems when do the right
thing”.
