Climate Justice Based
Ecospirituality (JBE)
Dedicated to
St. Francis of Assisi
His life revolved around
Compassion and Conservation
Ecospirituality vs JBE

Ecospirituality built on
sentimentality





Finding Spirit of God in
Cosmology
It’s a spiritual view of our
relationship with earth and
universe
Religions recommend


Justice based ecospirituality
built on logic and science
Enabled by ecological
intelligence
Enabled by ecological
conscience
Justice demands
Ecospirituality Starts with Spirit
God is Spirit
- Jn 4:2
God the Spirit is enfleshed in creation
The Spirit as the green face of God has become
in our time the wounded God.
Justice based Expression of the Spirit



Spirit = breathes, inhales, exhales,
Spirit is life: opposite is death, realms of death; injustice
Current process of production, consumption, global market
is the maximum organized expressions of the assault
against the Spirit.
Wounded Noosphere (Spirit)



External curse to internal curse
human Spirit is crucified
Earth Spirit lives with us in and through the
created world, suffers loss and pain
Mother Earth – God’s Habitat


After finding Spirit in Cosmology
our treatment of the earth must automatically
change.
Job 32: 8
“But there is a spirit in man,
and the breath of the Almighty
gives him understanding.”
Elihu, the Son of Barchel the Buzite


Elihu symbolizes spirit Noosphere) (Job 32:2)
Elihu claims that God can use suffering to purify the righteous to
perfection (A Destructive Creator) (PDR)
Issues or Mysteries?

Justice-based Ecospirituality does not see: Global
Warming and Climate Change (PD) as “Big
Issues” but as “Mysteries” or Spiritual Crisis
Climate Change is a
Spiritual Crisis
• This is the moment of Grace
• This crisis is about moving toward awareness,
enlightenment, perfection, consciousness,
complexity, transcendence and transformation
• Fossil Record reveals Complexity after every

Change the Culprit

be Creation, a change from beauty to beauty.”

Our generation is ready for Compassion and
Conservation.
Populorum Progressio


Paul VI called for the creation of a model of
market economy capable of including within its
range all peoples and not just the better off.
(Compassion)
He called for efforts to build new world in
which “all will be able to give and receive,
without one group making progress at the expense
of the other”. (Conservation)
Market Economy CV 4, 33
• Without internal forms of solidarity and
mutual trust, the market cannot completely
fulfill its proper economic function.
(Compassion)
• The social doctrine of the Church has
unceasingly highlighted the importance
of commutative justice, distributive justice
and social justice for the market economy.

On Time Justice
Intergenerational Justice
“Integral human development
cannot ignore coming
generations, but need to
be marked by solidarity and
inter-generational justice.”
CV 4, 48
Spirit of the Age can be
grouped into 4 themes
Four Spiritualities
1. Dominion Spirituality
or Justice Manipulated Spirituality




Earth is the Source of all Value
Humans feel rightfully to exploit nature
Subjugating and empowering nature
Lynn White Jr – Historical Roots of our Ecological Crisis
(1967)
2. Stewardship Spirituality
Man-centered Justice Spirituality
►
►
►
►
Man becomes the Source of All Value
humans care for creation, intend to serve our needs
wide gap between humans & creation
no sense of solidarity with other species.
3. Creation Centered Spirituality
or Justice for All Spirituality





Creation is the source of all Value
the emphasis on intrinsic value of nature
all life deserve protection
recognizes interdependence within web of life
Accepts science and other religious beliefs
4. Deep Ecology Spirituality
or Deep Justice Spirituality




According to Arne Naess, every being, whether
human, animal or vegetable, has an equal right to
live and blossom.
Celebrates our Cosmic Roots
radical re-visioning of nature
revival of asceticism, mysticism
Chief Seattle
This we know: the earth does not
belong to man, man belongs to the
earth. All things are connected like
the blood that unites us all.
Justicia in Mundo, 11
“ … demand for resources and energy by the richer nations,
whether capitalist or socialist, and such are the effects of
dumping by them in the atmosphere and the sea that irreparable
damage would be done to the essential elements of life on earth,
such as air and water …” (Justice in the World, 1971)

Investments
Pope Benedict on Climate Justice
 “One of the greatest challenges facing the
economy is to achieve the most efficient use, not
abuse, of natural resources.” CV 4, 50
 Climate Justice... is keeping the resources in
working order, as well as preventing over-use.
 It is not the Use: but the Abuse
Appeal from St. Francis to JBE
Not to hurt
Not to hurt our humble (the animals)
Is our first duty to them, but to stop there is
not enough
We have a higher mission
To be of service to them whenever they
require it
Animals – Commodity or Community?
Chicken, Sheep, Pig, Cow, Fish
They are our older brothers and sisters
They Carry God’s Spark, radiance, Stamp – God found it
was Good
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) ‘These sparks, in every soul,
which come directly from God, have no end: they are
imprinted forever with the stamp of God’s beauty.’

Sollicitudo rei Socialis, 34
One cannot use with impunity the different categories
of beings, whether living or inanimate, animals,
plants, the natural elements, simply as one wishes,
according to one sown economic needs.
(Compassion)
 On the contrary, one must take into account the
nature of each being and of its mutual connection in
an ordered system, which is precisely the
cosmos. (The Social Concern of the Church, 1987)
(Conservation)

The compassionate, humble, kind, loving
Pope St. Leo the Great - 461
• Wake up man, and recognize the high estate of your human
nature. Remember you are made in God’s Image
• Though we are God’s sons and daughters, we do not realize it
yet! (Meister Eckhart)

JBE built on Faith, Hope and Charity



Christian hope, a powerful social resource at the service of
integral human development
Hope is already present in faith, indeed it is called forth by
faith.
Charity feeds on hope and, at the same time, manifests it. CV 3,

St. Francis prescribes Justice based
ecospirituality to Creation
• He expressed Justice based
ecospirituality in his "Canticle of the
Sun." As a result:
• Sun becomes a brother
• Moon becomes a sister
• Wolf becomes a brother
• Lamb becomes a sister
