Define structure and function of muscles. 2. List six large muscle groups. 3. Illustrate the two problems of the Muscular System. 4. Describe four Injury-Related Muscular Problems. The Muscular System Objectives: Attitude: The students will be able to: 1. Have a feeling of empowerment by having the knowledge /skills for preventing and first-aiding muscle injuries. 2. Identify muscle injuries and what treatment is needed. 3. Identify ways to care for muscles The Muscular System Objectives: Practice: The students will be able to: 1. Analyze situations determining which group of muscle in injured. 2. Determine the injury type and apply the treatment. Myasthenia Gravis. 2. Muscular Dystrophy. Injury-Related Muscular Problems 1. Muscle strain – “pulled muscle” is a tearing or stretching of muscle fibers as a result of suddenly pulling them too far. Treatment consists of Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevation (R.I.C.E). 2. Bruise – discolored area under the skin caused by leakage of blood after injury. Ice or a cold pack can reduce the pain and swelling of a large bruise. Injury-Related Muscular Problems 3. Tendinitis – the inflammation of a tendon, usually caused by overuse. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medications, ultrasound, or injection of corticosteroids. 4. Hernia – one of more serious muscle injuries, which is protrusion of an organ or tissue through a weak area in the muscle. Surgery is usually required to repair a hernia.
