Infection Control
Following Aseptic Concepts
• Decrease transmission of disease
• Reduce severity of disease
• Might save a life
Categories of Disease
• Hereditary
• Degenerative
• Drug-induced
• Communicative
• Autoimmune
• Infectious

Main Classifications of
Microorganisms
• Bacteria
• Protozoa
• Fungi
• Rickettsia

Rocky Mountain
Spotted Fever
This micrograph reveals the presence of intracellular Rocky Mountain spotted fever
bacteria, Rickettsia rickettsii. Spotted fever group rickettsiae can grow in the nucleus
or in the cytoplasm of the host cell. Once inside the host the rickettsiae multiply,
resulting in damage and death of these cells.
Viruses
Rhinovirus causes
common cold
Togavirus
causes rubella
Adenovirus causes
respiratory infection
Herpes virus
Ebola virus

Ways Microorganisms
Cause Disease
• Produces toxins
• Produces an allergic reaction
• Attack and destroy the living cells
Levels of Aseptic Control

• Disinfection
• Sterilization
