Homework 2 - Fall 2016
Use correct significant figures and rounding where appropriate.
Textbook problems (Chapter 2, Housecroft and Sharpe, 4th): 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 18, 19,
20, 21, 23, 24, 26b, 27, 28, 29
Show all work and calculations where appropriate.
A. Define ionization energy and electron affinity. Describe the periodic trends.
B. Which one of the quantum numbers does not result from the solution of the
Schrödinger equation?
C. Calculate the effective nuclear charge, using Slater’s rules, for a 4d electron in W4+.
D. Draw the MO diagram for the valence electrons, assuming mixing of the s- and porbitals, for NO+. Fill in the bonding and antibonding orbitals with the appropriate
number of electrons. Illustrate the atomic orbital interactions for each of the
molecular orbitals. Label each of the molecular orbitals. Indicate the bond order and
if the molecule is paramagnetic or diamagnetic and explain why.
