Lesson # 19
Multiplying
Integers.
Multiplying and dividing
Integers.
Can be simplified…
If the rules are…
Practiced
Until…
Memorized !
When you multiply or divide
A positive with a positive,
Or
A Negative with a Negative,
You always get…
A
Positive
However…
If multiplying a Positive with a Negative…
The answer
Will be
A Negative.
The actual numbers or digits will
not change because of the signs.
Now this rule applies when dealing with
multiplying OR dividing
2 numbers…
Like
– 3 X +4
or
- 6 x -7
BUT…
When dealing with 3 or more
values…
There is a definite Pattern…
That may speed things up!
Here’s how it works…
First…
Look at your multiplying or
dividing question…
Then…Count how many “Negative” signs
are in the question.
If there is an even number of negative
signs…
The answer will be
Positive!
If there is an odd number of
Negative Signs…
The answer will be Negative !
A few examples…
(-2)(-4)(-5)
Remember …
a bracket beside a bracket
Indicates
Multiplication
Soooo…
(-2)(-4)(-5)
Count the number of negative
signs (3 right).
Since 3 is an odd number…
The answer must be…
Negative
Yahoo!
Your math teacher is
under the assumption…
that grade 8 students can
multiply 2,4 and 5, in their heads,
fairly quickly!
The product of -2, -4 and -5…
Would therefore be…
- 40 !
Another example…
(-1)(-2)(-3)(-4) = ?
First…
Count the number of negative signs…
(4 right)
That means the product
(answer)…
Must be
Positive.
Then do the multiplication…
1x2x3x4 =
24 (Right)
So the answer to
(-1)(-2)(-3)(-4)
Is
+ 24
Yaba, Daba, Do !
And Now…
It appears…
as though…
You should be ready …
To do …
10
Practice questions, yea!
