THE COORDINATE PLANE
November 9, 2010
WHAT DOES THE COORDINATE PLANE
LOOK LIKE? ANY THOUGHTS?
LET’S LABEL OUR OWN COORDINATE
PLANE
We need to label:
• x-axis
• y-axis
• origin
PLANE AS NUMBER LINES?
Talk in your groups about…..



Are we able to say that the x-axis is the
horizontal number line? Why or why not?
Are we able to say that the y-axis is the vertical
number line? Why or why not?
The point at which the axes cross is known as the
origin
ORDERED PAIRS
Consist of two numbers



The first number, a.k.a. the x-coordinate,
indicates how far to the left or right the point is
from the y-axis
The second number, a.k.a. the y-coordinate,
indicated how far up or down the point is from
the x-axis.
Ordered Pairs are written as:
(x-coordinate, y-coordinate)
WRITE THE ORDERED PAIR THAT
REPRESENTS THE LOCATION OF THE ITEM
PLOT AND LABEL EACH POINT ON THE
COORDINATE PLANE
A (5, 2)
B (0, 0)
C (-3, 0)
D (6, -3)
E (1, 6)
F (4, -4)
G (-2, -6)

BATTLE SHIP
You will need…

Graph paper

Pencil
BATTLE SHIP



Let’s pair up!
Fold a sheet of graph paper in half and draw 2
coordinate planes (one grid above the fold and the
other below)
Plane should be labeled from -5 to +5 on both the
x and y axes
BATTLE SHIP


On the coordinate plane graph that is above the
fold, plot the locations of five ships. The ships
must be placed vertically or horizontally (not
diagonally)
Points are as follows:





Aircraft carrier -- 5 points long
Battleship -- 4 points long
Submarine -- 3 points long
Destroyer -- 3 points long
Tug-Boat -- 2 points long
YOUR GRAPH SHOULD LOOK SOMETHING
LIKE THIS
BATTLE SHIP

After you have plotted your ships, each person will
take turns guessing a coordinate

If your partner guesses one of the coordinates that
your ship is on, you must say “HIT”

If your partner guesses one of the coordinates that
your ship is not on, you must say “MISS”

Once you partner has guessed all the coordinates on
one ship, that ship has “SUNK”

The player who sinks all their partners ships first
wins!
BEFORE YOU GO…
Plots these points on a separate sheet of graph
paper. Hint: Don’t forget to label you axes and
the origin!
