Complex Numbers
Part 1
Big Idea:
Identify and graph complex numbers.
Imaginary Numbers



Imaginary numbers are represented
by i .
Imaginary numbers are defined as
the number whose square is -1.
So i 2 = -1 and 1  i
Imaginary numbers are of the form
of a + bi where a and b are real
numbers and b  0.
Ex 1: Simplify each number by using
imaginary number i.

A)  49
B)  25

C)
D) -  75
 200

E) 5  100
F) 6  16
Complex Numbers
Ex 2: Write each number in the form
of a + bi.

A) 4   5
B)  32  10

C) 6   4
D)   72  1

E) 5   125
F)  6   36

Absolute value of a complex number
a  bi  a 2  b 2
Ex 3: Find the absolute value of each
complex number.
 A) 5i
B) 8i

C) 1 3i
D) 5  2i
Ex 4: Simplify each expression.

A) (5 – 2i)+ (-3 +i)

B) (-7 + 3i) +(-4 – 4i)

C) (6 + 10i) + (-6i)

D) 7 - (9 - 4i)
