Adding
Integers

How do I add integers if the
signs are the same?

IF THE SIGNS
ARE THE SAME
Add the integers
 Sign of the
bigger number!


1.
2.
3.
4.
Examples:
r = 23 + 34
r = 57
s = -9 + -6
s = -15
- 4 + (-3) = q
+7 + +11 = t
-7 = q
+18 = t

How do I add integers if the signs
 IF THE SIGNS ARE
are different?
Examples
1.
2.
3.
4.
f = (-17) + 20
m = 52 + (-60)
6 + (-3) = s
g = 3 + (-8)
DIFFERENT:
 Subtract
 Take the sign of the
bigger number!
f=3
m = -8
3=s
g = -5
When solving an equation,
look inside
See if positives and negatives
are side by side.
If this is the situation
that exists,
Then the rules for add’n subtract
take on a new twist.
If the operation sign
in the middle is a plus,
Then look at the signs on the numbers
it really is a must.
Chorus:
Same-Add
Different-Subtract
Take the sign of the bigger number.
Same-Add
Different-Subtract
Take the sign of the bigger number.
More examples
1. m = -10 + 8
m = -2
3. w = -4 + (-3)
w = -7
2. d = 7 + 20
d = 27
4. b = 5 + (-2)
b=3
5. d = -5 + +5
d=0
Adding Integer Rules
 Same
signs – add and take the sign of the
bigger number
ex: 5 + 8 = 13
ex: - 5 + -8 = - 13
 Different
signs – subtract and take the sign of
the bigger number
ex: - 8 + 5 = - 3
ex: 8 + - 3 = 5
