using algebraic methods, manipulative, or models.
Assignment Number #20
Expressions, equations, &inequality
Definitions
• Expressions: A variable or combination of variables,
numbers, &symbols that represents a mathematical
relationship.
• Equations: A statement that two mathematical expressions
are equal.
• Inequality: A mathematical sentence that compares two
unequal expressions using: greater than , less than etc.
Examples
• An example of expressions is:
4r, 3x+2y 25
• An example of equations is:
n+50=75 means that n+50 must equal 75.
• An example of ineqaulity is:
x>2
X is a value greater than 2!
Questions???
Cindy is 6 years older
than Phil. In two years the
sum of their ages will be
30. How old is Cindy?
C=Cindy & P=Phil
C=6+P
(C+2)+(P+2)=30
(6+P+2)+(P+2)=30
2P+10=30
2P=20
P=10
C=6+10
C=16
Cindy is 16 & Phil is 10.
Check: (16+2) + (10+2) = 30
