Exploring square roots and rational numbers
vocab
• Square root- a number that when multiplied by itself equals the given number.
• Perfect square- square of a whole number
• Rational number- number that can be written as a quotient of two integers in
which the denominator is not zero.
Finding square roots
• Sqrt (100) (what times itself equals 100?)
• 10 x 10 = 100 so sqrt(100) = 10
• Sqrt (4)
• 2 x 2 = 4, so sqrt (4) = 2
• You can also use your calculator √
symbol to do a square root
Square roots
• Sqrt(49)
• Sqrt(64)
Identify rational numbers
• Rational numbers are numbers that can be put into a ratio (a/b). So terminating
decimals, repeating decimals, and whole numbers are rational.
