Electronic Circuits
Course Overview
Welcome to Electrical
and Electronic Circuits!
• Instructor is Ken Ports
– [email protected]
– 674 7455
• Textbook is Rizzoni, Principles and
Applications of Electrical Engineering, 4th
Edition
• Who are We?
• Emphasis is Lifelong Learning
– Take Notes!
– Benjamin Bloom and You
2
Goals of 4991
• Lifelong learners
• Able to analyze electrical and
electronic circuits
• Able to understand the operation of
widely used electronic devices
• Able to understand and design
electronic circuits
3
How Mastery Method
Works
• Students must demonstrate mastery
of all course topics to some standard
level in order to pass the course
• Nibble away at course material
– 7 Tests and a comprehensive Final
• Students own learning
– Not the instructor!
4
Mastery Method in
ECE 4991
• We go one chapter at a time
• Chat about the fundamentals – work some
problems, etc.
• Quiz at the end of every chapter
• In this course, each chapter builds on the
preceding chapter
– Not understanding Ch 2  problems w/ Ch 3, etc.
– Don’t fall behind…!
• Final exam is based on retention of
fundamentals over entire course
– Lifelong learning means learning AND retaining!
5
Some Course Details
• Make sure you’re on Blackboard with the
right email address!
• Attendance – suit yourself

• Fall 04 Results – 43% A, 45% B, 10% C, 3% D

What’s Important in
Chapter 2
• Always learn the definitions – I will
assume that you always know them
• Learn the graphics – make sure you can
convert a word description into a useful
picture (and vice versa!)
• Learn KCL, KVL and the other laws and
how to apply them
• Learn about current and voltage dividers
and sources and how to analyze them
8
For Next Time
• Skim through Chapter 1 – bring any
questions to class next time
• Read and start learning Chapter 2
• Start working problems for each
Chapter 2 section
• Suggest come prepared to chat
about fundamentals and some of the
