What are action verbs?
• Action verbs are the words that
tell what a noun is doing.
The dog barks.
In this sentence, barks is the action
verb because it tells what the verb is
doing.

Direct Objects
A direct object
receives the action
of an action verb.

It answers the
question “What?” or
“Whom?”
Direct Objects
To find the direct
object, first identify
the action verb of
the sentence.
The boy hit the ball.
In this sentence,

In this sentence,

Now ask yourself the
question, “What or
whom did the boy
hit?”
The boy hit the ball.

object. It receives

verb.
