Subject and Predicate can be compound meaning it can have more than one. Unit 9 Nouns • Nouns names a person, place, or thing. • Two kinds of nouns – Common • Any person, place, or thing – Proper • Names a particular person, place, or thing Unit 9-Forms of nouns • Singular – one • Plural – More than one • Collective – A group • Possessive – Show ownership Unit 10 Verbs • Three kinds of verbs –Action –Linking –Helping Verb Phrase Action Verbs • Action verb is a word that describes what the subject is doing. • 2 objects follow action verbs – Direct object • Receives the action of the verb • Tell whom or what the action was done – Indirect object • Appears only in a sentence with a direct object • Tells for whom or to whom the action was done • Always comes before the direct object Linking Verbs • Linking verbs connects a sentence’s subject with a noun or adjective in the predicate • 2 predicate words follow linking verbs – Predicate Noun • Tell what the subject is – Predicate adjective • Tells what the subject is like Helping Verb Phrase • Helps the main verb express action • Helping verb phrase is made up of the linking verb plus the action verb Verb Tenses • Present-may end with (s) – Describes an action that is happening now • Past-ends with (ed) – Describes an action that has already happened • Future-(has the helper will or shall with the before the action verb) – Describes an action that will or shall happen Participles and Verb Forms • • • • • • Present participle Past participle Present Progressive Past Progressive Present perfect tense Past perfect tense Unit 11-Pronouns • Pronouns takes the place of a noun • 4 kinds of pronouns – Indefinite pronouns • Does not refer to a particular person, place, or thing – Possessive pronoun • Shows who or what has something – Subject pronoun • Used as the subject – Object pronoun • Used as a direct object, indirect object, or object of a preposition Unit 12-Adjectives • Adjectives describes a noun or pronoun • Answers 3 questions – Which one – What kind – How many – Proper adjective-adjectives formed by proper nouns and are always capitalized – Adjectives that compare • Comparative-compares two things – Ends with -er • Superlative-compares more than two – Ends with -est – Special Adjectives • Articles-a, an and then • Demonstratives- this, that, these, and those Unit 13-Adverbs • Adverbs describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. • Usually end with (-ly) • Answers 3 questions – When – Where – How Adverbs that compare Comparative-compares two things Superlative-compares more than two Unit 13 continued • Telling adjectives and adverbs apart – If the word follows a linking verb then it is an adjective • Ex. Tom was happy at the movies. • adjective – If the word follows an action verb then it is an adverb • Ex. Tom lives happily in New York. • adverb Double Negatives • Do not express the words “no” or “not” in the same sentence. They mean the same exact thing, which is NO! Unit 14 Prepositions, Interjections, Conjunctions • Prepositions are location words that tell a time or a place – Prepositional phrases starts with a preposition and ends with an object(noun or pronoun) • Interjections-express strong feelings • Conjunctions-joins words or groups of words in a sentence • 2 kinds of conjunctions – Coordinating conjunctions • And-introduces an idea • But-introduces a contrasting idea • Or-gives you a choice – Correlative conjunctions works in pairs • either/ or • Neither/nor • Both/And •Good Luck on the EXAM!!!
