• Function as nouns: subjects, direct
objects, indirect objects, objects of
prepositions, or predicate nominatives
• Begin with words what, who, whoever,
whom, whomever, whatever, and that
Noun Clause Examples

Adjective Clauses
• Function as adjectives—describe or
modify nouns and pronouns
• Begin with words who, whom, whose,
which, or that
• Answer the questions which one, what
kind, or how many?

Adverb Clauses
• Function as adverbs—describe or
modify verbs, adjectives, or adverbs
• Begin with subordinating conjunction
• Answer questions how, why, when,
where, to what extent, how much, and
under what condition?
