A PhD position is available in the group of Prof. Stefano Gonella at the University of Minnesota Twin-Cities.
(http://personal.cege.umn.edu/~gonella/) in the area of wave mechanics of advanced materials, with focus on
elastic and acoustic metamaterials.
Current topics of interest are: 1) mechanics of nonlinear metamaterials (including soft architected materials,
nonlinear lattices and granular crystals) and 2) tunable and reconfigurable metamaterials.
In addition to the core theoretical and computational research, graduate students will have the opportunity to
conduct experimental work using a state-of-the-art 3D Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (3D-SLDV).
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and creative individual with solid foundations in mechanics, good
communication skills and strong coding experience. Proficiency with Matlab is essential. Experience with other
programming languages or commercial FEM packages is an asset.
Applicants must submit a brief cover letter, including a statement of interest in the group’s research, a detailed
resume, indicating education, experience and qualifications, and the names and contact information of three
references. All applications should be sent via email to Prof. Stefano Gonella at [email protected]. Qualified
candidates will be contacted to schedule a follow-up interview. The positions are expected to start in fall 2016
or spring 2017. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
The department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering at the University of Minnesota distinguishes itself
for the highly diverse interests and backgrounds of its faculty and for its multidisciplinary research, which stretches
beyond the classical boundaries between disciplines. The department currently features over ten faculty members
actively conducting research in the most diverse areas of mechanics.
The University of Minnesota is one of the most comprehensive and prestigious public universities in the United
States. The main campus is located in the vibrant heart of the Minneapolis-Saint-Paul metropolitan area (the Twin
Cities), one of the fastest-growing economic, arts and culture hubs in the nation, just blocks from theaters,
museums, professional sports venues and endless recreation opportunities.
