House Investigates Flint, Michigan Water Crisis Major Takeaways From the Hearing “Examining Federal Administration of the Safe Drinking Water Act in Flint, Michigan” ? Takeaway Details Both the EPA and the state accepted some responsibility for the problem, but both also pointed some level of blame Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) incorrectly advised the city that corrosion control treatment was not needed. The state said the implementation of the federal Lead and Copper Rule from the EPA was ineffective. People familiar with the water crisis were missing from the hearing, and many of the people present at the hearing were new to their roles Former Flint Emergency Manager Darnell Earley, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, former EPA Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman, and former MDEQ Director Dan Wyant were all not present at the hearing. MDEQ Director Keith Creagh just started the role in January, and Deputy Assistant Administrator for the EPA’s Office of Water, Joel Beauvais, just started his role in the fall.
