When you hear the
words “plate tectonics”
what comes to your
mind?

Here are some of the things
that come to my mind:
•Continents
•Oceans
•Crust
•Movement
•Volcanoes
•Earthquakes

Divergent Plate Movement
•Two plates move apart.
•Magma rises and forms
new crust. This creates
seafloor spreading.
•Creates ridges in the
ocean.

ng.html#anchor6715825
Examples: Atlantic
Ocean, East African
Rift, Mid-Atlantic
Ridge

Convergent Plate Movement
•Oceanic crust
collides and slides
beneath the
continental crust.
•Volcanoes can form.
•Deep trenches can
form in the ocean.

Examples: Cascade Mountain Range,
Mount Saint Helens, and Andes

Transform Plate Movement
•Plates slide past each
other.
•Movement usually
occurs on the ocean
floor.
•Earthquakes can
occur when friction
and pressure build
up.
Examples: San Andreas Fault, Blanco
Fault, Mendocino Fault, Murray Fault,
and Molokai Fault

Volcanoes

7
How are the location of
the plates relate to the
location of earthquakes
and volcanoes?
•Most of the volcanoes and
earthquakes occur at the
edges of the plates.
