Earth’s Physical Layers 9/22/15
7-1b pgs. 168-169
IN: What is the difference
between continental
crust and oceanic crust?
Scientists
think about the
Earth’s layers in two ways.
1. composition
2. physical properties
 Two
types
Layer
that contains most
of the Earth’s mass.
Outer
core
liquid
Inner
solid
core
Why do you think
the outer core is
liquid while the
inner core is solid?
As
you go deeper inside the
Earth both temperature and
pressure/density increase.

The more pressure the denser the material.
Why is the inner core not liquid?
• Although the inner core is very
hot, it is solid because of the
pressure exerted on it.
Lithosphere Outermost,
 Part
rigid solid layer
of the crust and upper mantle
Lithosphere
Divided
into pieces called
tectonic plates.
Asthenosphere Soft
layer of the mantle on
which pieces of the lithosphere
move.
 Made
of solid rock that flows very slowly
Mesosphere Strong
lower part of the
mantle.
= Mesosphere
OUT: Why do you think scientists know
so much about the Earth’s
interior?
