Volcanoes
Volcano
 An opening in the Earth's crust through which molten
rock, gases and ashes erupt
 Landform that develops around this opening
Magma Formation
 Molten rock that is formed in the Earth
 Conditions at both divergent and subduction boundaries
are ideal for magma formation
 Most volcanoes are found along mid ocean ridges, where
plates are moving apart & subduction boundaries, where
plates are being forced under other plates
Magma and Erupted Materials…
 Types of Magma 
Basaltic magma
(Kilauea), Andesitic
magma (Mount St.
Helen), and Rhyolitic
magma (Yellowstone
caldera)
Lava
 Magma that reaches the Earth;s surface is called LAVA.
Lava Types….
 Pahoehoe  basaltic lava at high temperatures flowing
quickly out of vents; lava with smooth ropelike surfaces
 AA  cooler basaltic lava that moves more slowly, cools
quickly with rough jagged surfaces.

Ash and Fragment Material
 Ash  fragments that are less than 2 millimeters in
diameter
 Lapilli  fragments that are between 2 to 64 millimeters
 Block or Bomb  fragments that are larger than 64
millimeters
Volcanic Landforms
 Shield Landforms
 Cinder Cones
 Composite volcanoes
 Caldera
