Part B
As the plates move, the rocks on either side
of the fault do not slide freely past one
another. Instead, they stick, or become
locked together. As the plates continue to
move, the rocks are put under great
pressure, causing them to bend or stretch
until they reach their breaking point.
Suddenly, the rocks snap and slide past
each other, releasing energy as vibrations
that are felt as an earthquake.
