Biology Intervention Program (BIP) • • • • EVERY Wednesday and Thursday 4:10-5:10PM Room 564 (Ms. Darden/Ms. Bright/Ms. Joyner) Credit Recovery (1st Semester) BIP Contract • • Attendance is mandatory (1 absence allowed only) Additional Review for EOCT EVOLUTIONARY APPLICATIONS EQ: How does evolution affect us as humans? Pesticide Resistance: • Pest • -icide Pesticide: Something annoying (like an insect!) To kill chemicals that kill insects Resistance: Not affected by something Pesticide resistance: An insect does not respond to pesticides Pesticide resistant insect = adaptation Survives longer Reproduces more NATURAL SELECTION Passes on more genes Pesticide resistance become more common If a few pesticide resistant insects survive, it will create a new generation of insects that carry the pesticide resistance gene Why is it a problem? Insects that are pesticide resistant can eat all our crops! What can we do? Farmers can use fewer pesticides Consumers can buy organic (without pesticides) when possible Antibiotic Resistance bacterial meningitis rash Antibiotics: Treatment to kill bacteria Antibiotic Bacteria that do not resistance: respond to antibiotics Variation: some bacteria do not respond to antibiotics Selection: the resistant bacteria survive Inheritance: the resistant bacteria pass on their genes Time: over many generations the bacteria become resistant Why is it a problem? If you get sick with a resistant bacteria, you can’t treat it with antibiotics What can we do? Doctors can prescribe fewer antibiotics Patients can finish ALL their antibiotics Tuberculosis If a bacteria is resistant to the antibiotics, then it will survive and pass its resistance gene to the next generation This is why doctors tell people to finish all their antibiotics! Otherwise a few bacteria may survive and pass on their resistance genes EXIT TICKET
